Florence Favorites

Florence - the Tuscan city called “the cradle of the Renaissance” is known for its art galleries and the famous Duomo. But there’s plenty to explore beyond that. Here are some of my personal favorite places to see, shop, and eat when I’m in this beautiful city:

SEE

Museo Galileo - one of the world's largest collections of scientific instruments, including some owned by Galileo Galilei. And yes, supposedly they have his finger preserved in a jar.

L'Importuno - on your way to the Uffizi, stop in Palazzo Vecchio to find a face carved into the wall by none other than Michelangelo himself. Legend says he used to get stopped in the Palazzo by a guy who never knew when to shut up, and he bored the artist so much that he had time to carve his face into the stone while he waited for him to finish a boring story

Il Porcellino - the 17th-century original bronze statue is now in a museum, but it's still considered good luck to rub the snout on the replica!

SHOP

Madova Gloves - handmade gloves in every style and color you could ever need. Every time I come to Florence I buy a pair - even though I live in Orlando and it’s never cold enough for me to wear them!

Santa Maria Novella Pharmacy - originally founded as a monastery in the 1200s, the world's oldest pharmacy now sells luxurious soaps, skincare, and perfumes. They are credited with making the world’s first true perfume for Catherine di Medici’s wedding in 1533. Its worth a stop just to see the beautiful store and antique cabinets! There’s also a small museum about the history of perfume and soap making, and a quiet cafe where you can try some of their liquors made with historical recipes.

Bartoluccci - Florence is where “Pinnocio” was written and this charming little store keeps the idea alive with their handmade wooden puppets, puzzles, and other old-fashioned toys. A great spot to pick up a unique gift for kids!

EAT

La Prosciutteria - made-to-order charcuterie boards, sandwiches, and an amazing wine selection. Sandwiches are only €5 and come wrapped in paper, so if you’ve filled up on meat and cheese you can easily sneak one in your bag for a snack later. Don't be deterred by the long line - it moves quick - and don’t get their line and the line for the touristy All’Antico Vinaio sandwiches confused. They’re on the same street but La Prosciutteria is much better, and they don’t make you sit on the sidewalk to eat. Last note: La Prosciutteria has a sister shop in Trastevere if you’re looking for something similar in Rome

Gustarium- Ssshhh! Don't tell Naples, but this place may just have the best pizza in all of Italy... You order by the slice - a few bites per piece — and are encouraged to try multiple varieties. Flavors range from classic Margarita to interesting combinations like sausage and berry. Note that hours are limited - only 12-5 daily - so time your visit carefully!

Altobio Espperienza Toscana - Not a restaurant, but I have to include this specialty shop that focuses on olive oil, balsamic vinegar, truffles, honey, and other specialty products from Tuscany. And you can sample nearly anything in the store before buying! Located in Florence's Mercato Centrale where you can easily spend an afternoon browsing the other vendors for cheese, books, leather goods, and more. The food hall downstairs has great non-Italian options in case you need a break. You can have sushi, dumplings, or vegan sandwiches, and wash them down with fresh smoothies or craft beer.
